Getting to Tarija

Ready to see these coffee farms for yourself? Here’s how to reach Tarija.

From La Paz: Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) flies direct from El Alto International Airport (LPB) to Tarija’s Capitán Oriel Lea Plaza Airport (TJA) in about 1 hour 10 minutes, with a couple of flights daily. Prefer to see the countryside instead? Overnight buses (Trans Copacabana, Flota San Lorenzo, and others) make the roughly 10–16 hour trip along a mostly paved route, departing in the early evening and arriving the next morning.

From other countries: Tarija’s airport handles domestic flights only, so international travelers first fly into La Paz, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, or Cochabamba, then hop a short connecting flight to Tarija. BoA also flies Tarija to and from Cochabamba and Santa Cruz.

Coming overland from Argentina: Tarija sits close to the border of Argentina, making a land crossing surprisingly easy. Buses run from Salta through the Bermejo–Aguas Blancas crossing (around 12 hours) or via Yacuiba further east. Either route rewards you with valley and vineyard views before you ever reach a coffee farm.

However you arrive, the journey is part of the story — high mountain passes giving way to Tarija’s warm, wine-country valleys.

Beyond the exceptional coffee, Tarija offers a myriad of reasons to visit this captivating region. Immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes, where vineyards and coffee farms coexist in harmony.
