A trip to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay is easier than what I imaged. I started from Buenos Aires and stay hanging in this cool city for a couple of days. Then you have two options to cross over to Uruguay: By plane or using a ferry to cross over Mar de Plata. I choose the second option.
In addition, there are two ferry boat companies in Buenos Aires that will take you to Colonia del Sacramento in about 2:30 hours. Buquebus and Colonia Express. I decided to go with Buquebus since I noticed their boats look modern and ‘cool’ in my opinion. Just make sure if you’re taking an Uber to place the correct address for the ferry Terminal in Puerto Madero. They have some offices around Buenos Aires and when I was there the Uber driver got confused and took me to an office instead of the ferry terminal.

As you wander through the cobblestone streets of Colonia’s historic quarter, you’ll be transported back to the 17th century, when the Portuguese and Spanish battled for control of this strategic port city. The colonial architecture, fortified walls, and picturesque plazas contribute to the unique ambiance of this enchanting town.
Moreover, the Barrio Histórico, or historic quarter, is the heart and soul of Colonia del Sacramento. Its narrow streets and colorful buildings exude a sense of history and charm. You can spend hours getting lost among the well-preserved colonial houses and exploring the various museums that showcase the city’s rich heritage.

For instance, one of the highlights of the Barrio Histórico is the Plaza Mayor, a central square that serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Furthermore, surrounded by historic buildings and lined with trees, the plaza is the perfect spot to take a break and soak in the atmosphere. Don’t forget to visit the iconic lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Rio de la Plata.

In my opinion, you only need one day to experience what Colonia del Sacramento has to offer. Consequently, the town is small and you can walk everything in one day. However, some people choose to rent a car or a golf cart style car to go around. This is really up to you. I enjoy walking. When you walk you can really feel the place and stop whenever you like to take photos, or have a beer at one of the local restaurants. No need to look for parking.
